Value Creating Art

Remember that $ 120,000 duct tape banana?

It is a composition with little intrinsic value. The materials are mundane – the banana is even perishable – and hardly any technical skills are required to make it.

Yet it was sold as art for a lot of money. Subsequently it became world famous.

The buyers have been critical to its success. Would it have been art if the same banana was sold for $ 5? Maybe so, but probably hardly anyone had ever heard of it.

Normally, value is created with a work of art. ‘Comedian’ made me realize that the reverse is also possible: creating a work of art through value.

I have extrapolated this concept in several series of digital conceptual artworks. The sales price influences the design and vice versa.
